Coastal Paintings

A move from a busy urban part of Cornwall to the coast four years ago has inspired Gill Turner’s latest paintings, an almost complete contrast to the urban ones where movement and metropolitan clutter were packed into every canvas.
In these paintings she aims to capture only the essential qualities and atmosphere of the coastal landscape in order to distil its essence. Extraneous detail is rejected, leaving a simplicity of quiet space, simplified forms and heightened colours.
The commonplace; a tree, a field, a boat becomes in Gill Turner’s hands something transformed, in an invented but marvellous landscape. As in her urban work, the landscape is reconstructed as an invented place quite simply by being rendered in paint leaving just the essential qualities of the actual place.
